City of Bellevue, Kentucky
Bellevue Kentucky is located in Northern
Campbell County between Newport and Dayton. The area was
once part of the hilltop property of Gen. James Taylor
whose
home in Newport was officially called Bellevue. In 1866
the area was laid off into lots by developer A.S. Berry
and named in honor of the old Taylor estate. Berry, a
moving force behind the development of Bellevue was a
four-term congressman from the area in 1893-1901.
Bellevue was incorporated as a City in
1870. At the turn of the century Bellevue was known for
its' beaches that were popular for swimming, canoeing
and clubhouse dining. By the late 20's river pollution
and the number of lawsuits over accidents had closed most
of the beaches.
During the 30's Bellevue was known for
the Horseshoe Gardens, an entertainment facility that
featured big name acts such as the Mills Brothers. The
Gardens was destroyed in the flood of 37'.
Today's Bellevue is seeing a rekindling
of interest in restoring the historic homes of the community,
and development of the riverfront area. With the surge
in interest in Northern Kentucky as a whole in 2001, and
neighboring Newport booming with riverfront development
the bright future of Bellevue is yet to unfold
