City of Burlington,
Kentucky
Burlington's history dates back to 1798
when Boone County was carved out of Campbell County. The
new county needed a county seat, and keeping with
tradition
the site had to be close to the geographical center of
the county. The selection was settled when John Craig
and Robert Johnson agreed to donate 74 acres for a town.
The town was named Craig's Camp in honor of John Craig.
The name was changed to Wilmington and later to Burlington
around 1815.
In 1824 Burlington was incorporated into
a city, but how long it operated as a city is not clear.
Records indicate that city elections took place as late
as 1917. It appears the city charter was allowed to expire
at some point leaving Burlington an unincorporated community.
One of only two in the State of Kentucky.
In 1939 the Burlington High School was built.
The high school later became the home for the Burlington
Elementary School, when the high school merged with other
community high schools to form the current Boone County
High in 1953.
The biggest changes in recent years have
been the widening of Burlington Pike from I-75 to Washington
Street. The community still retains its' rural atmosphere,
but has progress creeping in at a hearty pace with residential
development.
